If it trips again right away, you've got a shorted element or thermostat. Test each element with a multimeter set to continuity or resistance. A good element reads roughly 10 to 16 ohms. Zero or infinite means it's dead.

For gas units, watch the pilot. If it won't light, check for a tripped gas supply or an empty tank. If it lights but dies when you release the knob, that's the thermocouple.

Check under the tank and around every fitting for water. Dry the area, wait, and see where moisture returns. That tells you fitting versus tank.

Look at the T&P valve discharge pipe. If it's dripping, the tank is relieving pressure or temperature, and you need to know why.
