What's actually happening
Your heat pump water heater pulls heat out of the surrounding air to warm the water. A side effect of that process is condensate, the same cool water that drips off an air conditioner.
That condensate collects in an internal pan and drains out through a small line, usually 1/2 inch or 3/4 inch tubing. As long as the line is clear, you never think about it.
The power outage didn't break anything on its own. It set up the conditions: a dried-out trap, a frozen line, or a restart that made the unit run harder than usual.
When it kicked back on, it started making condensate at full speed. If the drain couldn't keep up, the pan filled and spilled over the lip onto your floor.
The fix is usually simple and cheap. The damage from ignoring it is not.
Why the overflow follows an outage
in most cases, this comes down to a drain that was already marginal. The outage was just the trigger.
A clogged line is the top suspect. Condensate is warm and slightly humid, so algae and sludge grow inside the tubing over months. The clog narrows the line until it can't handle a hard run.
The trap is the second suspect. If your install has a P-trap and the unit sat idle for hours or days, that trap water evaporated. On restart, condensate spills before it ever fills and primes the trap again.
In winter, freezing jumps to the top of the list. A garage that dropped to 20 degrees during an outage can turn a full drain line into a solid plug of ice.
The sneaky one is the mode reset. A lot of these units default back to a factory heat-pump-heavy setting after losing power. More runtime, more condensate, and a drain that used to keep up now can't.
- Clogged drain line: gradual buildup, exposed by the hard restart
- Dry trap: evaporated during the outage, spills before repriming
- Frozen line: only in unconditioned spaces during cold outages
- Aggressive default mode: unit runs harder than you set it to
- Cracked internal pan or blocked safety pan: less common, worth checking
