How to flush it, step by step

A flush is the first fix worth trying, and it's the same move a plumber would start with. Here's how it goes on a typical tank.

First, kill the heat. On an electric unit, shut off the breaker. On gas, turn the control knob to pilot or off. Skip this and you can wreck an element or fire the burner on an empty tank.

Shut off the cold water supply valve on top of the tank. Open a hot water faucet somewhere in the house to break the vacuum and let the tank drain.
