What that popping sound actually is
Your water heater is popping because there's a layer of hardened sediment sitting on the bottom of the tank, right over the heat source.
Water gets trapped between that crusty layer and the steel. When the burner or lower element fires, that trapped water flashes to steam. The bubbles force their way up through the sediment and pop. That's the sound.
People describe it as popping, percolating, rumbling, or like gravel tumbling in a dryer. Same cause every time.
Here's the important part: the noise is a symptom, not the problem. The sediment is the problem, and it's been building quietly for years.
Why the sediment builds up in the first place
Every gallon of water carries dissolved minerals, mostly calcium and magnesium. When water sits in a hot tank, those minerals drop out and settle on the bottom.
The harder your water, the faster it piles up. A home on well water at 15 grains per gallon can build a serious layer in two or three years. A home with a softener might go a decade with barely any.
Gas heaters get the worst of it. The burner heats the tank from directly below, so the sediment sits right in the hottest zone and bakes into a hard crust. Electric units heat from elements inside the tank, so the scale tends to coat the lower element instead.
Age matters too. As the anode rod wears out, corrosion inside the tank speeds up and adds to the debris. A 9-year-old tank with a spent anode is basically a sediment factory.
None of this happens overnight. If your heater just started popping, it's been building for a while and finally got thick enough to trap steam.
