What rusty hot water actually means
Rusty hot water is a message from inside your tank. In almost every case, it's telling you the steel is starting to corrode.
Here's the fast diagnosis. Fill a white cup with cold water, then fill another with hot from the same faucet. If the cold is clear and the hot is tinted brown, orange, or yellow, your water heater is the source.
That narrows it to three things: a used-up anode rod, sediment eating the tank bottom, or the tank itself rusting through.
The good news is that two of those three are cheap DIY fixes if you catch them early. The third means it's time for a new heater.
The urgency here is real. Rusty hot water is often the last warning before a tank leaks, so don't file this under 'someday.'
Why your tank is making rusty water
Every steel water heater has a sacrificial anode rod hanging inside it. Its whole job is to corrode instead of the tank.
When that rod gets used up, corrosion jumps to the tank walls. That's when you start seeing rusty water. On a heater that's 3 to 6 years old, this is the most common cause found.
Sediment is the second offender. Minerals settle to the bottom, trap water against the steel, and slowly rust through the glass lining. You'll often hear popping or rumbling when this is happening.
The third cause is simple age. Past 10 to 12 years, the internal glass lining fails and the tank corrodes everywhere. No rod or flush fixes that.
Don't overlook the fittings. The steel nipples on top of the tank can rust and shed rust into just the hot line, which fakes the symptoms of a dying tank on an otherwise healthy heater.
And occasionally it's not the heater at all. A water main break or old galvanized supply pipe can rust both hot and cold. That's why the cold-versus-hot comparison matters so much.
