Scan for dirty, gray-streaked insulation. That discoloration marks where air is leaking through from below.
Look toward the eaves. Can you see daylight or a clear channel at the soffit, or is insulation jammed right up against the roof? Blocked soffits choke the whole system.
Trace every exhaust fan duct. Follow it with your eyes and confirm it reaches a roof or wall cap. A duct that just ends in the attic is a problem you need to fix.
Check the sheathing overhead. Dark stains, frost in winter, or fuzzy growth all point to moisture trouble.

DIY insulation top-off with batts runs roughly $1 to $2 per square foot in materials. A 1,000 square foot attic lands around $1,000 to $1,500 if you're buying a lot of batts.
Renting a blower and buying loose-fill cellulose or fiberglass often beats batts on cost and coverage. Many big-box stores rent the machine free if you buy enough bags. Figure $0.70 to $1.50 per square foot in material.
Baffles to protect soffit airflow are cheap, about $2 to $5 each, and you'll want one per rafter bay near the eaves.

Where I draw the line is old wiring. Knob-and-tube runs hot and can't be safely buried in insulation. If you've got it, get it evaluated first.
Vermiculite is a hard stop. If you see small gray-brown pebble-like flakes, don't disturb it. Get it tested for asbestos and bring in an abatement pro if needed.
Active mold over a large area, or soft, water-damaged sheathing, both mean you call a remediation company. You have to fix the moisture source too, or it comes right back.
Cutting new roof or soffit vents is roofer territory. It involves the roof envelope, and mistakes there cause leaks.
