Why one room never gets comfortable in winter
Short version: the walls are letting heat out faster than your furnace can pump it back in.
A finished 2x4 wall with good insulation runs about R-13. An empty one is closer to R-4. That difference is enormous, and it's usually why one room feels 8 to 12 degrees colder than the rest of the house.
The cold room is almost never random. It's usually a corner room with two or three exterior walls, or a room stacked over a garage or crawlspace. More surface area facing the cold means more heat loss.
Here's the part people miss: it's rarely just low R-value. Air leaks make it worse. Cold outside air sneaking through the top plate, rim joist, or around outlets robs whatever insulation is there of most of its value.
So the fix has two parts almost every time: seal the air leaks, then fill or refill the wall cavities. Do one without the other and you'll be disappointed.
What's actually causing the cold room
Empty cavities top the list in older homes. If your house went up before the mid-1970s, there's a real chance the walls were never insulated at all. Builders just didn't do it, and it was rarely retrofitted.
Settling is the next big one. Fiberglass batts sag and blown cellulose compacts over decades. The result is a bare strip at the top of the wall where heat escapes first (heat rises, so that top gap hurts a lot).
Water damage is sneakier. A slow window leak or an old roof problem can soak the insulation in one section. Wet fiberglass has almost no R-value and won't dry inside a sealed wall. You'll often smell it before you see it.
Air leaks deserve their own mention because they're so common and so fixable. A room can have decent insulation and still feel drafty and cold if outside air is pouring through gaps. Smoke-test it and you'll be surprised.
And sometimes it's the floor, not the walls. Rooms over garages and cantilevered sections lose heat downward through an uninsulated floor cavity. Check the floor temp before you blame the walls.
