What patchy snowmelt is actually telling you
Snow on a roof is a free thermal camera. On a well-insulated home, snow sits evenly and melts slowly from the top down as the sun works on it.
When you see bare patches, warm circles, or neat stripes while the rest of the roof stays covered, heat is leaking out from below and melting the snow at those exact spots.
The source is almost always your attic. Either warm indoor air is leaking up through gaps, or the insulation is too thin to hold the heat in your living space.
This isn't a shingle problem and it's not a leak in the usual sense. Your roof is fine. It's just reporting on what's happening in the attic underneath it.
The usual suspects, in order
In most cases, the culprit is air leakage around things that poke through your ceiling. Recessed lights, bath fans, and the holes where wiring passes through the top plate all let warm air escape.
That warm air rises straight up, hits the roof deck, and melts a little circle of snow. If your melt spots form a pattern that matches the light fixtures in the rooms below, you've found it.
The next most common cause is plain old missing or squished insulation. Someone stored boxes up there, ran a cable, or the batts just settled and slid. Wherever it's thin, heat pours through.
The attic hatch deserves special mention. It's usually a flimsy uninsulated panel, and it leaks heat like an open window. A melt spot right over the hallway hatch is a dead giveaway.
Even stripes across the roof are different. That's thermal bridging, heat conducting through the wood rafters or truss chords. It's normal to a small degree, but heavy striping means the insulation between the framing is too shallow.
