What's actually going on down there
Humidity that comes and goes is telling you something specific. It's reacting to conditions that change: the weather, the seasons, when your AC runs.
That's good news, because it usually rules out the scary stuff like a hidden slab leak or a burst pipe. Those tend to produce steady, stubborn moisture that doesn't care what the sky's doing.
In most homes, intermittent crawlspace humidity is a condensation story. Warm, moisture-heavy air finds its way in through foundation vents and gaps, then hits surfaces that are cooler than the dew point. Water forms out of thin air (literally), and your hygrometer jumps.
The other half of the story is the ground. Bare or poorly covered soil feeds moisture into the space every day, and it gets worse after rain. Combine humid inbound air with a wet floor and you've got swings that make no sense until you map them against the weather.
The usual suspects, ranked
Start with the biggest levers. In a humid climate, open foundation vents are the number one driver of summer humidity swings. The old idea that vents dry a crawl assumes dry outside air, which most of the country doesn't have in July.
Next is the ground cover. A missing, thin, or torn vapor barrier lets soil moisture evaporate straight up. Even a decent barrier that's been shredded by past crawlers or pests can leak plenty.
Then there's the insulation itself. Fiberglass batts under the floor act like sponges. They pull humidity out of the air, hold it, and release it slowly, which stretches short weather spikes into long soggy stretches.
Lower on the list but common: drainage problems that soak the soil near the foundation, condensation dripping off cold pipes and ducts, and the occasional dryer or bath fan someone vented into the crawl instead of outside.
Most homes have two or three of these working together. The vents let humid air in, the bare soil feeds it, and the wet insulation holds it. Fix one and you'll improve things. Fix the stack and you actually solve it.
