What's actually happening
Your French drain isn't just failing to help. It's holding water in the ground and letting it surface right where you don't want it.
That's the cruel irony of a dead drain. A gravel-and-pipe trench that can't move water becomes a shallow reservoir. Rain fills it, the water has nowhere to exit, and it pools worse than bare dirt would.
The good news: most of these failures come down to a blockage you can find in an afternoon. The bad news: some are crushed pipe or wrong slope, and those mean digging.
in most cases the fix starts with two things. Find the outlet and check if it's buried, then flush the line with a hose to see if water moves.

Why French drains stop working
Almost every failed French drain dies of one thing: silt.
Fine soil particles wash into the gravel and the pipe's perforations over years. If the original installer skipped filter fabric or used the cheap woven stuff, this happens fast, sometimes within 5 years.
Once the voids between the stones pack with mud, the whole trench turns into a solid brick. Water can't percolate through, so it rises to the surface.
The second big killer is a buried outlet. The pipe has to daylight somewhere downhill, and that end gets covered by mulch, grass, or a critter's nest. Water backs up the entire line from one blocked opening.
Crushed pipe is next. Thin corrugated pipe folds under a riding mower, settling soil, or root pressure. A single flat spot dams the whole run.
Then there's slope. A French drain needs at least 1 inch of fall per 8 feet. If the trench settled or was built flat, water just sits and eventually overflows.
Last and least common: the drain is simply undersized. A new patio, redirected gutters, or a neighbor's runoff can dump more water than the system was ever built to handle.
