What's actually happening
Your French drain is a gravel-filled trench with a perforated pipe at the bottom. Water seeps into the gravel, drops into the pipe through the holes, and flows downhill to daylight or a dry well.
In an older home, the problem is almost always sediment. Fine silt and clay wash into the gravel and the pipe over years, filling the voids that water needs to move through.
Here's the catch with pre-1990s drains: many were built without filter fabric. That fabric (a geotextile sock or wrap) keeps soil out while letting water in. Skip it, and the drain slowly self-destructs.
So the drain works great for 15 or 20 years. Then it declines fast, usually over two or three wet seasons, right up until it barely drains at all.
The good news: a partial clog often flushes clear with a hose for under $120. The bad news: a drain with no fabric that's fully silted is usually past saving, and you're looking at a rebuild.
Why older French drains clog with sediment
The root cause in most older homes is the missing filter fabric. Without it, every rain carries a little more soil into the system until the gravel and pipe are packed.
Even drains that had fabric aren't immune. Fine particles slip through over decades and settle in the low spots of the pipe, narrowing it from the inside.
Roots are the second big offender. Trees within about 15 feet sense the moisture and send hair-fine roots into the pipe holes. Those roots catch sediment and turn a small clog into a plug.
Then there's physical failure. Cheap thin-wall corrugated pipe from the 1980s crushes under traffic or settling soil, and a crushed spot dams up everything behind it.
Don't overlook the simplest cause: a buried outlet. If leaves, mulch, or a critter nest block where the drain daylights, water has nowhere to go and the whole line silts up.
One more, less common: ground settling. Old soil shifts unevenly, and a drain that once had proper fall can develop a low belly that holds water and traps silt.
