Why is my French drain outlet buried and no longer draining?

In most cases the outlet didn't fail, it just got covered. Soil, mulch, grass thatch, and washed-in silt raise the grade a couple inches a year until the pipe end is sealed under sod. The other common version is that the last 3 to 6 feet of pipe silted up and the plug is now underground. Both are usually a shovel-and-hose fix for under $200.

    Lawns rise. Mulch, topdressing, grass clippings, and worm castings add roughly a quarter to a half inch a year, and a mow crew edging near the outlet speeds it up. After five or six seasons the pipe end that used to sit proud of the swale is sitting under 2 to 3 inches of sod.

What a buried outlet actually means

A French drain has three parts that matter: a perforated pipe in a gravel trench, a wrap of filter fabric, and a place for the water to leave. That last part is the outlet, and it's the piece most likely to quietly stop working.

When homeowners say the outlet is buried, they usually mean one of two things. Either they can't find the pipe end anymore because the lawn grew over it, or they found it and nothing comes out even after a hard rain.

Both point at the same zone. The final 6 feet of pipe and the ground immediately downhill of it do all the failing.

Here's why that's good news: it's the most accessible part of the entire system. You're not tearing up a 60-foot trench. You're digging one hole about the size of a five-gallon bucket.

Before you dig anything, run a garden hose into the highest inlet for 10 minutes and watch where water shows up on the surface. If it puddles 20 feet from the outlet, your problem isn't the outlet at all.

Confirm the outlet is the problem before you dig

The hose test is the whole diagnosis. Feed a running garden hose into the topmost inlet grate, catch basin, or cleanout and give it a solid 10 minutes at full flow.

If clean water eventually trickles out at the outlet, the line is passable and your issue is grade at the discharge point. That's a shovel fix.

If nothing comes out and you can hear water gurgling or see it welling up mid-lawn, you have a blockage somewhere between that point and the end.

If nothing comes out and nothing surfaces anywhere, the water is going into the gravel bed and soaking away. That means the plug is close to the outlet and the trench is acting as a holding tank.

Why outlets bury themselves

Lawns are slow-motion landfills. Every season adds organic matter, mulch drifts, clippings break down, and earthworms push castings to the surface. A quarter inch a year doesn't sound like much until you multiply it by ten years.

Now add the swale. Most outlets daylight into a shallow drainage swale, and swales fill in faster than flat lawn because they catch everything that washes downhill.

Mow crews finish the job. String trimmers throw soil, and mower decks shear off any pipe end that sticks up too proud, so installers tend to set outlets flush. Flush becomes buried within a few seasons.

Then there's the silt problem, which is separate and worse. Fine particles work through the fabric over the years and travel downhill until the water slows. Water slows at the outlet, so that's where the sediment stops.

Corrugated pipe makes this dramatically worse than smooth-wall. Each rib is a little pocket, and a pipe running at 1/8 inch per foot doesn't move fast enough to scour them out.

If your system uses black corrugated pipe with a sock, expect to service the outlet every 2 to 3 years. Smooth-wall SDR-35 with glued joints can go a decade untouched.

Finding an outlet you can't see

Start with the terrain. Water leaves your property somewhere, and the outlet is almost always at the lowest point the installer could reach without crossing a property line.

Look for a subtle depression, a strip of grass that's greener or coarser than the rest, or a spot that stays soft for two days after everyone else's lawn dries.

Then probe. A 3-foot piece of 3/8 inch rebar or a proper soil probe, pushed in every 12 inches along the suspected line, will find pipe fast. You'll feel the difference between soil and plastic immediately.

If probing fails, work from the other end. Push a flat sewer tape or a plumber's fish tape down the line from the nearest inlet and mark the ground every 5 feet as it advances. Where it stops, dig.

Old permit drawings, the original landscape invoice, or a photo from the install year are worth ten minutes of searching. People forget they have these.

Once the pipe mouth is exposed, pull out whatever's in reach by hand. Nest material, leaf pack, and soft silt come out with a gloved hand and a stick faster than with any tool.

Then flush. Push a garden hose 4 to 6 feet up the pipe with the water wide open and work it in and out. Wet silt breaks up quickly, and you'll get a brown discharge that clears within a minute or two if you're winning.

For anything stiffer, a 25-foot hand auger from a rental counter runs about $30 a day and handles root hairs and packed clay in the tail end.

Where DIY stops

Digging out a buried outlet is one of the most DIY-friendly drainage jobs there is. The pipe is shallow, the hole is small, and the failure mode is obvious once you see it.

You should handle it yourself if the pipe end is within 18 inches of the surface, you can reach the general area with a shovel, and the hose test shows water making it most of the way down.

Bring in a drainage contractor when the line won't clear after honest effort, when the pipe is under hardscape, or when you can't locate the outlet at all after an hour of probing.

Also call when the buried outlet is dumping water back against a foundation. That combination has a way of becoming a basement problem, and the grading fix is bigger than a shovel and a Saturday.

Ask for a drainage specialist or a landscape contractor who does drainage work, not a general plumber. Storm drainage and sanitary plumbing are different trades with different equipment.

How long can you leave it?

Through a dry stretch, weeks are fine. Nothing bad happens to a stalled French drain when there's no water in it.

Through a wet season, treat it as a two to four week item. A drain that can't discharge holds water in its gravel bed, and saturated soil next to a foundation is the whole thing you installed the drain to prevent.

Move it to this weekend if you're seeing water at the foundation, water in a crawlspace, or a soft spot in the lawn that never dries.

Winter changes the math in freezing climates. Water sitting in a blocked line freezes, expands, and pops couplings apart. Clearing it in November is cheaper than repairing it in March.

If your French drain is a footing drain or a basement waterproofing component rather than a yard drain, a blocked outlet is urgent. Those systems keep water off a foundation wall, and they don't have a backup.

Seasonal timing and what buries outlets when

Spring is the biggest offender. Mulch delivery, topdressing, and the first mow of the season all pile material toward the low corners of the yard.

What the install era tells you

Systems put in before roughly 2000 often used clay tile or unsocked perforated pipe with hand-graded gravel. They clog more often but tend to have generous outlets that daylight into an actual ditch.

The 2000s and 2010s brought cheap black corrugated pipe with a filter sock, sold at every home center. It installs fast and it silts up faster, especially the sock, which blinds off with clay fines within about 8 to 12 years.

Wear gloves for anything you pull out of a drain pipe. Standing water in a stalled line grows bacteria, and if the drain also picks up driveway or roof runoff, add whatever was on those surfaces.

Wet rodent nests down with a hose before removing them, and wear an N95. Dry nest debris aerosolizes, and hantavirus is a real concern in the western US.

Skip the pressure washer wand inside the pipe unless you have a proper drain jetting attachment. A standard wand can kick back hard in a confined pipe.

Never trench deeper than waist height without shoring. Outlet work should never get you close to that, and if it does, stop and call someone.
