What's actually happening
Your sump pump is the last stop for water that collects in a French drain. When it overloads, it's telling you the drain is now feeding it more water than it can clear.
The renovation is almost always the cause. Construction changes the paths water takes across your property, and those changes rarely account for the drainage system that was already there.
Think about what the reno moved. A new patio sheds every drop that used to soak into grass. A regraded flowerbed can tilt water back toward the wall. A downspout tucked underground for looks can pipe roof water straight to your pit.
The sump itself is usually innocent. It was sized for a smaller water load, and now it's getting more than it was ever meant to handle.
That's good news, because the fix is often cheaper than replacing equipment. You're correcting where the water goes, not buying a stronger pump to fight it.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with downspouts. This is the single most common cause techs find. Crews bury downspout extensions to clean up the look, and the easiest place to route them is the existing perimeter drain. Now every rainstorm dumps your entire roof into the sump.
Next, look at grading. New soil settles. A flat grade or one that pitches even slightly toward the house sends surface water down to the drain instead of away. Six inches of drop over the first 10 feet is the target.
Then count the new hard surfaces. A 300 square foot patio can shed thousands of gallons in a single storm, all of it running off instead of soaking in. If it slopes toward the drain, your sump inherits that load.
Check the discharge line too. If the reno covered or moved where your sump pumps water out, that water can circle right back into the drain. The pump ends up moving the same water over and over.
Construction damage is worth ruling out. Heavy equipment crushes buried pipe, and dumped fill silts up drains. A damaged line backs water up until it overflows into the sump in ugly surges.
An undersized pump is last on the list. It's real, but it's usually a contributing factor, not the root cause. If the water load is right and the pump still can't keep up, then you upsize.
