What water surfacing above the drain line actually means
Your French drain is a pipe in a gravel trench, and the whole thing works on one principle: water goes in, water travels downhill, water leaves at the far end. When water surfaces, one of those three steps has stopped.
In practice, the failure is almost always at the exit. Either the outlet itself is blocked or the pipe leading to it is packed with silt. Water fills the trench from the bottom up, reaches the top of the gravel, and finds the thinnest patch of topsoil to push through.
That's why the wet spot rarely tells you where the problem is. It just tells you where the cover was weakest.
The urgency depends almost entirely on distance from your house. Surfacing 30 feet out in the lawn is annoying. Surfacing 3 feet from a foundation wall means you're actively loading that wall with water pressure every time it rains, and that's the version worth spending money on this month.
The failure modes, ranked by what I actually find
Buried and blocked outlets lead the list by a wide margin. Lawns grow up around discharge points, mulch migrates, mowers push clippings, and pop-up emitters seize with grit in their hinge. I've cleared outlets under four inches of sod that a homeowner mowed over weekly for three years without knowing the pipe was there.
Internal silt is next. Corrugated 4-inch pipe has a ribbed interior that traps sediment at every fold, and the low spots collect it fastest. The classic accumulation point is where the perforated pipe transitions to solid discharge pipe, because flow velocity drops right there and whatever's suspended in the water drops out.
Blinded filter fabric is the quiet one. The fabric doesn't tear or collapse; its pores just pack with clay particles until the whole gravel trench is effectively wrapped in plastic. The pipe inside may be perfectly clean while the trench refuses to accept a drop of water.
Physical damage shows up wherever something heavy went over shallow pipe. Contractor trucks on a lawn, a new patio poured over an unmarked line, a paver walkway on compacted base. Thin-wall corrugated pipe crushes at surprisingly modest loads when it's buried less than 12 inches deep.
Root intrusion is regional but brutal where it happens. Willow, silver maple, and privet send fine roots through perforations and build a fibrous plug that looks like steel wool inside the pipe. Techs have pulled root masses out of drains within 15 feet of a mature maple that were dense enough to hold water like a sponge.
Slope problems and undersizing round out the list. Both are design failures, and neither one responds to cleaning, which is why the diagnostic order matters so much.
