What's actually happening
Your pump motor is running. You can hear it. But the water in the pit sits there like the pump isn't even on.
That combination points to one thing: the water can't leave. The motor is doing its job, and the impeller may even be spinning, but somewhere between the pit and the outside, the path is blocked.
The good news is that this is often a cheap, fast fix. A stuck check valve or a clogged intake screen costs pennies to sort out. The bad news is that a burned-out impeller or a frozen underground line is more work.
First move, always: unplug the pump. Then follow the water from the pit outward until you find where it stops.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with the check valve. It's the single most common reason a running pump won't lower the water. When it fails, the pump lifts water a few feet up the pipe and it drains right back down the moment the motor cuts off.
The tell is a bounce: the level drops, the pump clicks off, and the water level jumps back up within a second or two. That's the whole column of water falling back into the pit.
Next, the impeller. That little fan at the bottom of the pump moves the water. Silt, gravel, or a stray chunk of debris can pack it or jam it so the motor spins but nothing flows. Pull the pump and spin it by hand (unplugged) to check.
Then the discharge line itself. In cold months, the exterior pipe freezes. In any season, it can get crushed, buried in mud, or clogged with leaves at the outlet.
Airlock is the sneaky one. Air trapped in the pump housing keeps the impeller from grabbing water. A missing or clogged weep hole is usually the cause, and it's a five-minute fix.
Last, an old or undersized pump that's simply worn out. If everything else checks clean and the pump is 8-plus years old, it's probably tired.
