What a dead backup battery actually means
Your sump pump has two jobs: pump water out when the pit fills, and keep doing it when the power dies. The backup battery covers that second job. When it's dead, you've lost your safety net.
Here's the reassuring part. Your primary pump still works fine on household power. Nothing is flooding right now (assuming the power's on).
The problem is timing. Power outages and heavy rain tend to arrive together, exactly when you need the backup. A dead battery means the one time the primary can't nothing takes over.
That's why we rate this high urgency even though it's not a burst-pipe emergency. You've got time to fix it right, but don't let it slide into the next storm season.
Why the battery died in the first place
in most cases, it's just age. Backup batteries are consumable parts, like furnace filters or smoke detector batteries. They wear out on a schedule whether you use them or not.
A flooded lead-acid battery gives you 3 to 5 years. AGM sealed types stretch to 5 to 7. If yours is older than that and won't hold a charge, you found your answer and don't need to dig further.
The second most common culprit is the charger. The backup controller is supposed to float-charge the battery so it's always topped off. When that circuit fails, the battery slowly bleeds down and one day it's flat.
Corrosion is the sneaky one. Basements are humid, and lead-acid batteries vent a fine acid mist that crusts up on the terminals. That crust blocks the charge from getting in, so a perfectly good battery reads dead.
Two less common causes round it out: low electrolyte on non-sealed batteries (the water evaporates and exposes the plates), and a stuck float switch that runs the backup pump nonstop and drains the battery overnight.
