What that bang actually is
The bang is water hammer. When your sump pump shuts off, the column of water racing up the discharge pipe suddenly has nowhere to go, and it slams to a stop.
That stop sends a pressure shock through the pipe. If the check valve closes hard, or if the pipe can move even a little, you hear a bang or a thud.
Good news: this is almost never the pump itself. It's a plumbing issue, and it's one of the cheaper sump problems to fix.
Most people solve it with a $30 soft-close check valve or a small arrestor plus a few pipe clamps. Budget an hour.
Why it's happening
Start with the check valve. The spring-loaded flap valves that ship with most big-box pumps are cheap and close hard. Once the water reverses and slaps that flap shut, the whole line jumps.
Next, look at how the pipe is held. Even normal shock gets loud if the discharge riser is free to move and it's slapping a floor joist or the sump lid.
Long discharge runs make it worse. More water in the pipe means more momentum, and more shock when it stops. That's where a water hammer arrestor earns its keep.
A strong or oversized pump moving a lot of water fast will hammer harder than a modest one. If your pump replaced a smaller unit and the banging started after, that's your clue.
Trapped air is the odd one out. If the weep hole is missing or the pit ran dry, air can compress and thump. Less common, but easy to rule out.
