How to track it down and fix it

Work top to bottom. First confirm the noise source, then find the cheapest fix that solves it.

Lift the float by hand to run the pump. Watch and feel the discharge pipe as it shuts off. If the pipe visibly jumps or you feel a hard jolt, it's water hammer.

Inspect the check valve. If it's a plastic spring-flap unit (the common one that comes bundled with pumps), that's your prime suspect.

Check the pipe supports. Any spot where the pipe touches wood or hangs unsupported is where the bang gets loud. Note those spots.
