What's actually going on
Your sump pump won't turn on in summer, and in most cases it's not a broken pump. It's a pit that dried out over weeks of low groundwater, and something jammed while it sat idle.
The float switch crusts up. The impeller dries and sticks. Or the GFCI outlet tripped a month ago and you never noticed because there was no water to pump.
Here's the trap with summer: a dead pump gives you zero symptoms until it rains hard. Then the pit fills, the pump doesn't fire, and your basement takes on water.
The good news is this is one of the most DIY-friendly sump problems there is. A bucket of water and ten minutes usually tells you exactly what's wrong.
The usual suspects, ranked
Start with power. The GFCI outlet behind the pit is the number one culprit, and it takes two seconds to check. Press the reset button and look at the breaker panel.
Next is the float switch. When a pit sits dry, the float can gum up with silt or hang up on the discharge pipe. If it can't rise, it can't tell the pump to run.
Third is the impeller. After weeks without spinning, dried grit locks it up. You'll usually hear a hum with no water movement, which is your tell.
Then there's the pump itself. Sump pumps run 7 to 10 years, and a hot dry summer can be the final straw for an old motor. Total silence with confirmed power means the motor's done.
Air lock and piggyback plug faults round out the list. They're less common but easy to rule out with a couple of quick tests.
