What a constantly running winter pump is telling you
A sump pump that runs nonstop in cold weather is almost always stuck in a loop. It pumps water up the discharge line, the water hits ice, and it drains right back into the pit.
So the float trips again within seconds, and the cycle repeats. From the basement it sounds like the pump never rests.
The pump itself is usually fine at first. The problem is that the water has nowhere to go.
Your job is to figure out whether water is genuinely coming in fast, or whether the pump is just recycling the same water because it can't push it clear of the house.
That difference decides everything: a discharge extension versus a bigger drainage conversation.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with the discharge line. In winter, a frozen outlet is the single most common reason a pump won't quit. The last few exposed feet freeze first.
Next, check where the water actually lands outside. If it dumps a few feet from the foundation, it sinks back to the drain tile and returns to the pit. Frozen ground can't absorb it, so the loop gets worse.
Then look at the float switch. If it's snagged on the pit wall or waterlogged, the pump won't get the signal to stop even when the water's low.
The check valve is the quiet failure. When it stops holding, everything the pump lifts falls straight back down. The pump refills its own pit.
Last, consider real inflow. A thaw, snowmelt, or a slow plumbing leak can genuinely flood the pit. Here the pump is doing exactly what it should.
