What's actually happening
One zone won't shut off means a valve is stuck open. That valve is the gatekeeper for that section of sprinkler heads, and something is preventing it from closing.
Here's the key thing to understand: your controller doesn't hold water back. It just sends a small electrical signal telling each valve when to open. Water pressure and a rubber diaphragm do the actual sealing.
So if the zone keeps running even after you cut power, the electronics aren't the problem. The valve out in your yard is physically stuck.
The good news is this is one of the more pro-level sprinkler repairs. Most of the time it's a cleaning job, not a replacement.
The bad news is it wastes water fast, so you want to shut off the supply today even if the repair waits.
Why it happens (in plain terms)
Almost every stuck-open zone traces back to the valve itself. Inside that valve is a flexible rubber diaphragm that presses down to stop water and lifts up to let it flow.
Debris is the usual villain. A grain of sand, a flake of pipe scale, or a shaving of PVC gets caught between the diaphragm and its seat. The valve can't seal, so water leaks by nonstop.
This is especially common right after spring startup or a winterization blowout, when grit gets stirred through the lines.
The next suspect is the solenoid, that black cylinder with two wires on top of the valve. If it's loose, or its little bleed screw is open, the valve stays energized or drains open.
Less often, the diaphragm itself is worn out. Rubber gets stiff and cracked after 8 to 12 years, especially with hard water or brutal summer heat, and a warped diaphragm won't seal even when spotless.
And sometimes it really is the controller: a stuck relay or a shorted field wire keeps sending 24 volts when it shouldn't. That's why unplugging the controller is your first diagnostic move.
