What an intermittent backflow leak actually means
Your backflow preventer sits between your home's clean water and your sprinkler system. Its whole job is to stop lawn water (and whatever's in it) from ever flowing back into your drinking supply.
When it leaks on and off, the device is usually still working. Something inside just isn't sealing perfectly under every condition.
That intermittent part is good news. A device that leaked constantly would point to a cracked body or a fully failed check. On-and-off leaking almost always means debris, worn rubber, or pressure behavior.
The fix is usually cheap. A rebuild kit and an afternoon handle the majority of these, and you rarely need to touch the plumbing behind the device.
The most common reasons it happens
Debris is the number one culprit. A grain of sand lands on a rubber check seat and holds it open just enough to weep. Pressure eventually shifts the grit and the leak stops on its own, which is exactly why it feels random.
Worn rubber is a close second. Poppets, springs, and O-rings harden with age. Around the 5 to 8 year mark they start sealing fine at high pressure but leaking at low pressure.
Thermal expansion fools a lot of people. After the zones shut off, sun-heated water expands and the relief port vents a small amount for under a minute. That's normal. If someone panics and tightens or plugs that port, now you've got a real problem.
Freeze cracks show up every spring. If the device wasn't drained before a hard freeze, ice can put a hairline crack in the bonnet. It seals when warm and weeps when cold, which reads as intermittent all over again.
