Why does my lowest sprinkler head leak after the zone shuts off?

Low-head drainage or a real leak? How to tell, plus repair costs

In most cases this is low-head drainage. When a zone shuts off, gravity pulls the water still sitting in that zone's pipes downhill and out the lowest sprinkler in the run. If the seeping stops within a few minutes and the water is clean, it's normal physics, and check valves fix it. If the head weeps for hours or never stops, you've got a zone valve passing water or a cracked lateral.

    When the zone valve closes, the lateral pipe is still full of water. That water finds the lowest opening in the zone and pushes the pop-up up just enough to escape. A yard with 8 feet of elevation change across one zone will do this every single cycle.

What's actually happening at that low head

Your sprinkler zone is a closed pipe full of water. When the valve shuts, that water doesn't vanish. It sits there under nothing but its own weight, looking for the lowest opening in the system.

The lowest opening is your lowest sprinkler head. The retract spring in a pop-up is weak by design (it only has to overcome a couple of psi), so a column of water sitting 8 feet above the head has more than enough push to lift the riser and drain out.

Irrigation people call this low-head drainage. It's a design consequence of running pipe across a slope, and it happens on brand new systems installed last month.

The cure is a check valve, which is a one-way rubber seal that holds the water in the pipe instead of letting it dump. Modern spray bodies often include one from the factory. Systems installed before roughly 2005, and plenty installed after, don't have them.

Quick sort: seepage that stops within 3 minutes and runs clear is gravity. Seepage that's still going after 10 minutes is a valve or a pipe, and check valves won't help you.

Telling normal drainage from a real leak

This is the whole diagnosis, and it takes about fifteen minutes. Run the zone for two minutes, shut it off, and start a timer.

Normal drain-down is fast and finite. It looks alarming for the first 30 seconds, tapers off, and quits somewhere between one and three minutes. The water is clear because it just came out of the pipe.

A fed leak behaves differently. It starts slower, stays steady, and doesn't stop. Come back in an hour and it's still going at the same rate.

The volume test backs this up. Set a 5-gallon bucket under the head and catch what comes out. Compare it against the water your pipe can actually hold: about 4.3 gallons per 100 feet of 1-inch pipe, about 2.7 gallons per 100 feet of 3/4-inch.

If you catch three gallons and it stops, the pipe emptied. If you catch three gallons and it's still filling the bucket, something upstream is passing water and you need to find out which valve.

Walking the causes in order

Start with gravity because it's the answer most of the time. If your yard has any meaningful slope and that head is at the bottom of it, drainage is the default explanation until the timer says otherwise.

Next is the zone valve. Electric irrigation valves seal with a rubber diaphragm held down by system pressure, and the seat underneath is a machined ridge maybe an eighth of an inch wide. One piece of grit on that ridge and the valve weeps forever.

Diaphragms also just get old. After ten or twelve seasons the rubber stiffens and stops conforming to the seat. Rebuild kits are $12 to $30 and take about twenty minutes per valve if the box is accessible.

Cracked pipe is third. It's less common than people fear, but it's the one worth ruling out because it wastes the most water. The signature is saturated soil in a distinct patch uphill from the head, present even when the system hasn't run in two days.

Then there's the possibility that your sprinkler is innocent. The gravel and loose backfill around a sprinkler can is the path of least resistance for shallow groundwater. At the actual low point of a property, after a wet spring, water genuinely does come up through the head from below.

Shut the irrigation main for a full 48 hours to settle that question. If water still surfaces, you have a drainage issue and no amount of sprinkler parts will fix it.

How check valves actually get installed

There are three approaches, and picking the right one depends on your head type and your elevation drop.

Drop-in retrofit checks are the cheapest path for spray bodies. You unscrew the cap, pull the riser assembly out, seat the little rubber check in the bottom of the can, and reassemble. Four to eight dollars per head, ten minutes each, no digging.

Full body replacement is the move for rotors and for any spray body that's more than about a decade old. A 4-inch spray body with a factory check runs $10 to $18. A gear-drive rotor with a check valve is $25 to $50.

In-line check valves go into the lateral pipe itself, usually right after the last head you want to protect. These are the answer when the elevation drop exceeds what in-head checks can hold, roughly 12 to 14 feet. They cost $12 to $25 plus a bit of digging and gluing.

You do not need to check-valve every head on the zone. Only the heads below the water line need to hold, and in practice that's the lowest two or three. Buy accordingly.

Before you reassemble any head, flush the lateral. Pull the nozzle off the lowest head, run the zone for 30 seconds, and let the accumulated grit blow out. Skipping this is how people install a brand new check valve and watch it fail in a month.

Working the problem in order

The sequence matters because each step eliminates a whole category. Don't buy parts until step four.

First, time the drain-down. Second, catch the volume in a bucket and compare it to your pipe capacity. Those two numbers separate gravity from everything else.

Third, do the pressurized-idle test. Close the irrigation shutoff, give it thirty minutes to fully bleed off, then reopen it with the controller off. Nothing should run. If the low head starts weeping within the hour, a valve is leaking and you've narrowed it to a zone.

Fourth, walk the slope. Probe with a long screwdriver every ten feet along the lateral run. Soil that swallows the screwdriver easily while the surrounding lawn resists is holding water it shouldn't be.

Fifth, act on what you found. Gravity gets check valves. Passing valve gets a diaphragm cleaning or rebuild. Saturated patch gets excavated.

Sixth, verify. Re-run the zone and re-time the drain-down. A properly checked head should give you a two-second dribble and nothing more.

If you're two hours into this with no clear answer, stop and call somebody. Diagnostic time is the part homeowners burn the most hours on and get the least value from.

Where the DIY line sits

Check valve installation is genuinely beginner-level work. If you can unscrew a jar lid you can pull a spray riser. There's no glue, no digging, and nothing under pressure while you work.

Valve diaphragm cleaning is a step up but still reasonable. You're removing six or eight screws from a bonnet, lifting out a rubber diaphragm and spring, wiping the seat clean, and putting it back. Shut the water off first and take a photo before you disassemble anything.

Digging up a lateral is where most homeowners should tap out. Not because the pipe repair is hard (a coupling and two clamps, or a PVC repair coupling), but because finding the break and restoring the turf takes longer than you think and the hole gets ugly fast.

Anything touching the backflow preventer is licensed work in most of the country. Those assemblies protect the potable supply and many jurisdictions require annual certified testing.

One more pro trigger: if you've got water surfacing at the low point with the entire irrigation system shut off, that's either groundwater or a leak on your domestic service line. The second one is urgent and belongs to a plumber or your water utility.

Can this wait?

If it's confirmed low-head drainage, yes. Put it on the list for the next dry weekend. Nothing catastrophic happens while you wait, though the wet spot will keep thinning the turf and grit will keep migrating into your nozzles.

Realistic timeline: fix it within the current season. A zone that drains twice a week for six months has pulled a meaningful amount of soil into the lateral by fall.

If it's a leaking valve, move faster. You're paying for water continuously and the saturated area expands week over week. Two to three weeks is a reasonable window.

If the wet area is within 6 feet of a foundation, a retaining wall, a driveway edge, or a slab, stop waiting. Continuous soil saturation next to structures causes settlement and heave that costs thousands to correct.

Freeze climates add a deadline. Get it handled before winterization, because a saturated low spot plus a hard freeze is how laterals crack in the first place.

Water surfacing at the low point 48 hours after you've shut the irrigation main isn't a sprinkler problem. Check whether your water meter is spinning with every fixture off. If it is, call a plumber the same day.

Seasonal and climate factors

In cold climates, spring startup is when this shows up. Check valve seals that hardened over the winter fail the moment the system repressurizes, and cracked fittings from the December freeze reveal themselves at the first low point downhill.

Spring is also peak water table season. In much of the Midwest and Northeast, groundwater sits within a couple feet of the surface in April and drops six feet by August. Seepage that vanishes in July was probably never irrigation water.

In the desert Southwest and Southern California, drain-down is more visible simply because the surrounding soil is dry and the wet ring stands out. It also matters more, since that's water you're paying premium rates for.

Humid Southeast yards with heavy clay hold the wet spot longest. Clay drains at a fraction of an inch per hour, so five gallons of drain-down twice a week never fully dries between cycles.

Fall is the right time to fix this in any freeze climate. Do it before the blowout, and while the tech is on site you're only paying one trip charge.

Is low-head drainage actually harmful, or just annoying?

It does real damage over time, just slowly. Every drain-down pulls a slug of air and soil grit backward into the lateral through the lowest head, and that grit ends up in nozzles and filter screens across the whole zone. It also wastes water and creates a permanent wet spot that thins the turf and invites moss.

How much water am I actually losing?

Multiply it out. A hundred feet of 1-inch lateral holds roughly 4.3 gallons, and 3/4-inch poly holds about 2.7 gallons per hundred feet. A zone with 150 feet of pipe draining twice a week is around 60 gallons a month, which is pennies on most utility bills. The turf damage and the grit in your nozzles cost more than the water does.

Can I just cap off the lowest head to stop the leak?

Please don't. Capping it moves the drain point to the next lowest head, and now you've got a dry patch of lawn plus the same leak twelve feet away. If you truly need to eliminate a head, cap it at the tee and pull the swing joint.

How much elevation can an in-head check valve hold?

Most spray body check valves are rated somewhere between 7 and 14 feet of elevation head, depending on the model. Rotors usually hold a bit more. If your zone drops 20 feet from the top head to the bottom head, in-head checks alone won't do it and you need an in-line check valve on the lateral.

Why did this start this year when the system has been fine for a decade?

The head leaks while the zone is running, not after. Same problem?

Different problem. Leaking during operation usually means a cracked riser, a bad wiper seal, or a split can, and you'll typically see water bubbling around the base of the head rather than out of the nozzle. Replace the body, which runs $10 to $25 in parts.
