What 'heads not popping' actually means
A pop-up sprinkler head rises because water pressure pushes the riser up against a spring. When the head stays flat, the water either isn't getting there or isn't arriving with enough force.
So the real question is always the same: is this one head or the whole zone?
One head down while the rest of the zone works points at that specific head, usually a clog or a worn riser seal. The fix is cheap and fast.
The whole zone flat points upstream at the valve, the supply, or the zone's flow capacity. That's where the bigger money hides.
Figure out which situation you have before you spend a dime. It changes everything about where you look.
The usual suspects, in order
Most no-pop calls trace back to a handful of causes, and they're not all equal.
At the top of the list is the zone valve. A solenoid that clicks but doesn't lift the diaphragm will kill the whole zone. You'll hear the click, but the heads just sit there.
Right behind it is pressure. If your backflow ball valves got left half-closed after winterizing, or a supply valve near the meter isn't all the way open, every zone suffers.
Then there's the sneaky one: too many heads on the line. Systems get expanded over the years, and eventually a zone that used to work fine can't push enough flow to raise all its heads.
For a single dead head, it's almost always dirt in the riser or a clogged filter screen at the base.
Broken lateral pipe and controller wiring faults round out the list. Less common, but they do happen, especially after a freeze or a rodent chews through buried wire.
