What a worsening self-clean lock actually means
Your oven's self-clean lock is a safety feature, not a bug. During a cleaning cycle the cavity runs 800 to 900 degrees, and the door bolts shut so nobody opens it into a face full of that heat.
So when the lock 'acts up,' the first question is always the same: is the oven actually cool? A huge share of these calls are just an oven that hasn't finished cooling down.
But 'worsening' is the key word in your case. A lock that gets slower, sticks halfway, or refuses to release over a period of weeks is a dying part, usually the latch motor.
The good news: this is one of the more DIY-friendly oven repairs if you're comfortable pulling a panel and using a multimeter. The bad news: the parts live in the hottest, most heat-abused corner of the whole appliance.
Why the lock is failing
Think of the lock system as three parts working together: a motor that slides the bolt, a switch that reports the door's state, and a control board that decides when it's safe to unlock based on the temp sensor.
When the failure gets worse over time, the motor is the usual suspect. It's a small, cheap motor sitting directly above a cavity that periodically hits 900 degrees. That's a brutal life.
The lock switch fails differently. It tends to go flaky first, giving the board bad readings so it either won't lock or won't confirm the unlock. You'll often see an intermittent error code.
Then there's the sneaky one: the temp sensor drifts, the board thinks the oven is 600 degrees when it's cold, and it keeps the lock engaged to protect you. Same symptom, totally different fix.
Last, in older ranges, the wiring harness above the door bakes brittle. A cracked connector gives you the exact same intermittent, worsening lock behavior as a dying motor.
