What the clicking is actually telling you
That clicking is your ignition system asking for a flame it can't confirm. On a gas range, a spark module or a glow igniter tries to light the gas, and it keeps trying until it senses fire. No fire, no stop.
The good news: the most common causes are cheap and often DIY. A wet burner cap, a clogged port, or a crooked cap covers a big share of the calls I run.
The part that makes this urgent is the gas. Every second the burner runs without lighting, you're releasing fuel into your kitchen. That's why you don't just let it click and hope.
So the first move is always the same: turn the knob off, confirm the clicking stops, and start from a safe, dry burner.
The usual suspects, in the order check them
start at the cheapest, most common fix and work up. Moisture is first, every time. A splash of water or a wet cap left after cleaning stops the spark from jumping, and the module just keeps clicking.
Next is the burner port and cap alignment. Grease and food crumbs plug the tiny holes, or the cap gets set back on crooked after cleaning. Gas can't reach the spark point, so nothing lights.
If the range is clean and dry and still clicking, now I'm thinking electrical. On the cooktop that's the spark module or a cracked electrode. On the oven it's almost always the glow-bar igniter losing strength.
The oven igniter is sneaky. It still glows orange, so people assume it's fine. But if it can't pull enough current to open the safety valve, you get a long glow and no flame.
Gas supply problems land at the bottom of my list because they're rarer, but they matter after a range gets moved or a shutoff gets bumped. Weak gas means the flame lights and dies.

- Clogged or crooked burner: very common, cleanable
- Weak oven glow igniter: the classic aging-oven failure
- Failing spark module: continuous clicking on a clean range
- Cracked electrode: spark arcs to the wrong spot
