What a worsening no-power problem actually means
Here's the short version: your GFCI is cutting power to everything wired past it because it's sensing current leaking to ground. When that pattern gets worse (tripping sooner, more often, or refusing to reset), the leak is growing.
The GFCI isn't malfunctioning when it trips. It's doing exactly what it was designed to do. The question is whether the thing it's reacting to is a bad appliance, water, damaged wiring, or the GFCI itself wearing out.
Downstream outlets going dead is normal GFCI behavior. A single GFCI protects itself and every outlet fed from its LOAD terminals. Trip the one in the bathroom and the garage and patio outlets can all die too.
The 'worsening' clue is what pushes this from annoying to urgent. A stable nuisance trip is one thing. A fault that's growing means insulation is breaking down, a seal is failing, or an appliance is heading toward a real short.
The usual suspects, in order
Most worsening GFCI problems trace back to one of a handful of causes, and you can narrow it down fast with a little logic.
Water leads the list. Exterior outlets, bathroom receptacles, garage and basement boxes all take on moisture as gaskets age and covers crack. As the leak path grows, trips come faster and closer together, which is exactly what 'worsening' feels like.
A failing appliance is next. A fridge compressor, sump pump, space heater, or old power brick can develop a slow internal short. It might work for a while, then trip the moment it heats up or runs under load.
The GFCI device itself is a strong contender once it's past ten years old. The internal electronics degrade, especially in hot or humid spots, and a worn unit trips on smaller and smaller faults until it won't reset at all.
Less common but serious: physically damaged in-wall wiring, or a mis-wired shared neutral from an old multi-wire branch circuit or a sloppy renovation. Both need a pro.
