What an intermittent GFCI trip actually means
Your GFCI is measuring the current going out on the hot wire against the current coming back on the neutral. When those don't match by more than about 4-6 milliamps, it assumes the missing current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't (possibly through a person) and it cuts power in a fraction of a second.
An intermittent trip means it's catching that imbalance sometimes but not always. Something on the circuit is flirting with the threshold.
That's the key insight: nothing about a GFCI is truly random. If it trips 'for no reason,' there's a reason you haven't spotted yet. Usually it's moisture, an appliance cycling, or the device getting old.
The frustrating part is that a harmless nuisance trip and a genuine shock hazard produce the exact same reaction. The device can't grade the danger. That's why you can't just shrug at a random trip.
The usual suspects, in order
Moisture is the most common cause found on intermittent trips, especially anything outdoors, in a garage, or in a bathroom. Water doesn't need to be visible. Overnight condensation inside a box is enough.
A downstream appliance is a close second. Motors and heating elements leak more to ground as they wear. The tell is timing: the GFCI trips right when the freezer compressor kicks on or the heat tape energizes.
Then there's the device itself. A GFCI that's 12 years old has electronics that have drifted. It starts tripping on loads it used to tolerate fine.
Wiring problems are less common but more serious. A shared neutral tied in wrong, a nicked cable, or a staple crushed too tight can all create intermittent faults that are miserable to chase.
Cumulative leakage is the sneaky one. Every device leaks a little. Put ten of them on one long garage circuit and you're sitting at the edge, where the smallest extra draw trips it.
