What a stuck GFCI button after a reno actually means
A GFCI outlet has two buttons: TEST (trips it on purpose) and RESET (restores power). After a renovation, one or both getting stuck almost always traces back to the work itself, not a random failure.
The most common story is paint overspray or drywall dust fouling the mechanism. That little spring assembly behind the buttons has almost no clearance, so a thin layer of dried paint or caked powder is enough to lock it up.
Less often, the outlet got physically damaged (a screw, a dropped tool) or rewired incorrectly when it was moved during the job.
Whatever the cause, a stuck GFCI is a safety issue, not just an inconvenience. If it can't move, it can't trip, and that's the entire point of the device.
Why it happens: the usual suspects after remodeling
Start with the timeline. If the button worked before the reno and stuck right after, the work introduced the problem. That narrows things fast.
Painters are the number one cause. They tape over outlets instead of removing them, and fine mist drifts under the tape and dries around the buttons. Once cured, the paint acts like glue.
Drywall dust is a close second. Sanding creates a talc-fine powder that gets into everything. It packs into the gap behind the buttons and turns gritty, then binds the spring.
Physical damage is third. A drywall screw driven near the box can crack the device face or nick the cable behind it. A cracked GFCI can bind the button and is never repairable.
Miswiring shows up when the outlet was relocated. If LINE and LOAD got swapped, the reset won't hold even though the button moves. This one needs a wiring check, not a cleaning.
