The device tripping isn't the problem. It's the symptom. Something is letting current leak, and in most cases in an older house that something is water.
The real fix has two parts: stop the moisture and replace the tired receptacle. Skip either one and you'll be back at the panel in a few months.
This is a low-urgency issue as long as you're not on a circuit feeding a fridge or sump pump. But low urgency doesn't mean ignore it.
Where the money goes
DIY, you're mostly paying for parts. A WR-rated GFCI runs $22 to $35, an in-use bubble cover is $12 to $18, and a gasket plus silicone is under $10.
With a pro, the $120–$350 range covers the service call, the same parts marked up, and the labor to reseal the box and clean up any tired connections.
The service call alone is usually $75 to $150 before any work, which is why a single outlet swap feels expensive relative to the part cost.
Costs climb if the box is rusted through and needs replacing, or if the electrician finds old wiring that has to be re-terminated or a section replaced. That can push you past $400.
If several outlets on the circuit are shot, replacing them together on one visit is cheaper per outlet than dragging a tech back out twice.
How we built these numbers
Our cost ranges come from typical 2026 US pricing for parts and residential electrical labor, weighted toward homes 25 years and older where retrofit conditions are common.
DIY figures assume you own basic tools and buy a WR-rated GFCI, an in-use cover, and sealant. Pro figures include a standard service call plus labor for the swap and reseal.
We don't factor in major surprises like full circuit rewiring or box replacement, which vary too much by region and condition to average fairly.
