What's actually happening when your GFCI trips from moisture
A GFCI compares the current going out the hot wire against the current coming back on the neutral. When those don't match by more than about 5 milliamps, it assumes the missing current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't (like through you), and it cuts power in a fraction of a second.
Moisture is a conductor. Not a great one, but good enough. When water bridges terminals or seeps into damp wiring, it creates a tiny leak to ground. The GFCI sees the imbalance and trips.
In an older home, this is almost never the GFCI misbehaving. It's the GFCI doing exactly what it's supposed to do because there's a real, if small, leakage path that opened up when things got wet.
The good news: most of these trips trace back to a handful of common, fixable causes. The trick is figuring out which one you've got before you start throwing parts at it.
The usual suspects, ranked
In older homes, the failure order is pretty predictable. Start at the top of this list and you'll usually find your answer fast.
First: the outdoor cover. Homes built before the late 1990s almost always came with flip-lid covers that seal fine when empty but leave a gap the moment you plug in an extension cord. Rain and dew walk right in.
Second: the age of the GFCI itself. These aren't lifetime devices. The sensing electronics drift as they age, and a 20-year-old unit will trip on humidity that a new one wouldn't blink at.
Third: moisture somewhere downstream. One GFCI often protects a string of outlets, so the wet spot might be 40 feet away in the garage or on a porch, not at the GFCI you keep resetting.
Below those, you get into corroded old connections and genuine appliance faults. Both are real, both are less common than the first three.
The wiring itself is the least likely and the most serious. Shared neutrals, reversed line and load, or water actually inside the wall cavity all show up as weather-related trips but need a pro to sort out.
