What water under your fridge is telling you
A puddle under the refrigerator means water is escaping somewhere it shouldn't. The good news: it's one of a handful of predictable spots, and most are cheap to fix.
Start by figuring out which of two families you're dealing with. Either the water is coming from inside the fridge (defrost and condensate) or from the plumbing that feeds it (supply line, valve, ice maker).
The fastest way to tell them apart is to touch the water. Cold and clean means condensate. Room temperature and steady means a supply line.
That single test saves you from tearing the freezer apart when the real problem is a loose fitting on the back wall.
The usual suspects, ranked
On most service calls, the clogged defrost drain wins. Fridges with the freezer on the bottom or French doors are especially prone to it because the drain path is longer and easier to plug.
Here's what happens: the fridge runs a defrost cycle a few times a day to melt frost off the evaporator coil. That meltwater is supposed to drip down a small tube into the pan below.
When food debris or ice blocks the tube, the water backs up. First you get a thin sheet of ice under the freezer drawer, then it overflows out the bottom.
Second most common is the drain pan itself. It's a shallow plastic tray under the compressor. It cracks with age, gets bumped out of level when someone cleans behind the fridge, or simply can't evaporate fast enough in a humid kitchen.
Then come the plumbing causes. If you have an ice maker or dispenser, there's a 1/4-inch water line, a shutoff valve, and an inlet valve on the back. Any of those can leak.
Old saddle valves (the kind that clamp onto a copper pipe and pierce it) are notorious. If yours is 15 years old, it's living on borrowed time.
- Clogged/frozen defrost drain: cold water, ice inside freezer, cyclic
- Full or cracked drain pan: puddle toward the front or under center
- Leaking supply line or valve: warm water toward the rear, steady
- Failing inlet valve: water near the back after an ice-fill cycle
- Worn door gasket: slow condensation, worse in humid weather
