What's actually going on
Here's the thing most people don't know: in almost every modern fridge, the freezer is where the cold gets made. There's one set of cooling coils, and they live behind the freezer wall.
The fridge section gets its cold as a hand-me-down. A fan blows air across those freezer coils and pushes some of it up through a duct and a little flap called a damper into the fridge.
So when your freezer's rock solid but the fridge is warm, the cooling itself is fine. The delivery is broken.
That's actually good news. The expensive part (the compressor and sealed system) is doing its job. You're usually chasing a cheap airflow problem instead.
The trick is figuring out where the air stops. It's either the coil is iced over, the fan quit, the damper is stuck, or something inside is blocking the vents.
The likely causes, ranked
On service calls, this symptom breaks down into a short list, and two causes account for most of them.
Number one is a defrost failure. Frost builds on the evaporator coil until it forms a solid white wall. The freezer stays cold because it's sitting right next to that ice, but the fan can't push air through it to the fridge.
Number two is a dead evaporator fan. No fan, no air transfer. The freezer holds by conduction, and the fridge gets nothing.
Third is a stuck damper, that little flap controlling airflow into the fridge. Ice or a failed motor jams it shut.
Then there's the free stuff: blocked vents from overpacking, and dirty condenser coils dragging the whole system down.
Least common, but real, is a bad thermistor or control board telling the fridge it's already cold when it isn't.
- Frost-blocked evaporator coil (defrost failure): most common
- Dead evaporator fan motor: very common
- Stuck or iced air damper: possible
- Blocked interior vents: possible, and free to fix
- Dirty condenser coils: less likely alone, cheap to rule out
- Failed thermistor or control board: less likely
