What's actually going on
Ice in your freezer during summer is almost always a moisture problem. Warm, humid air gets inside, hits the cold surfaces, and freezes.
The two big questions: how is that air getting in, and can the freezer melt off the frost like it's supposed to?
Most summer cases come down to a leaky door gasket or plain old door habits. Both are cheap and fast to fix.
A smaller share are defrost system failures, where the automatic melt cycle quit and frost just keeps stacking up. That's the one that costs real money.
Good news: you can tell these apart in about five minutes by looking at where the ice sits and whether it's soft or hard.
The likely causes, ranked
Start with the door gasket. It's the number one summer offender and the cheapest to rule out.
Old gaskets go stiff and stop compressing. Spills leave sticky spots that hold the door open a hair. Either way, humid air leaks in all day.
Next, look at behavior. If your freezer gets opened 20 times a day in July, that alone can frost things up. A full freezer and quick grabs make a real difference.
Then the defrost drain. On self-defrost units, meltwater has to exit through a small hole in the back floor. Clog that with crumbs or ice and water pools and refreezes.
If none of that explains it, you're probably looking at the defrost system itself: the heater that melts the coils, the thermostat that triggers it, or the board that runs the timing.
Overpacked vents and a sagging door round out the list. Less common, but easy to spot once you know to look.
