Your fridge won't stop running: the short version
A refrigerator that never shuts off is almost always struggling to shed heat. The compressor keeps running because the fridge can't reach its target temperature.
The usual culprit is dirty condenser coils. Second most common is a tired door gasket letting warm air sneak in.
Both are cheap DIY fixes, often under $30 in parts. Start there before you assume the worst.
The real danger isn't the running itself. It's what constant running does to the compressor over months. That's the expensive part you're trying to avoid.
Is it actually a problem, or just how modern fridges run?
Here's the part that trips people up. A healthy modern fridge runs most of the time. Some inverter models run almost continuously by design because they run slow and quiet instead of slamming on and off.
So 'running a lot' isn't the alarm. 'Truly never pausing plus warming food' is.
Two quick checks tell you which one you've got.
First, put a thermometer in a glass of water in the fridge overnight. If it reads 34F to 40F in the morning, the fridge is winning and you may just have an efficient unit.
Second, listen over an hour. Even a hardworking fridge usually takes at least a short break. A unit that literally never stops for a full day is a unit that can't catch up.
