What a hot EV charger outlet actually means
Your outlet is hot because a connection somewhere in it has resistance, and 40 amps flowing through resistance makes heat. Simple physics, real danger.
The usual spot is a terminal screw that's backed off over months of heat cycling. Copper expands when it's hot and contracts when it cools, and that motion slowly loosens the clamp.
A lamp or a phone charger would never expose this. But an EV charger pulls heavy current for six to eight hours straight, so any weak point gets pushed hard and long.
Here's the honest part: this is not a DIY tightening job on a 50 amp circuit. It needs a licensed electrician with a torque tool and the right parts.
Why it happens: the failure points that matter
In typical service work, most hot EV outlets trace back to one of three things: a loose terminal, a cheap receptacle, or wiring that was never sized for the load.
Loose terminals are the top offender. The screw was probably tight on day one, but nobody set it to torque spec, and heat cycling did the rest.
Cheap receptacles are a close second. A lot of NEMA 14-50 outlets are marketed for RV hookups, where you plug in a few weekends a year. Run them at 40 amps every night and they cook.
Then there's undersized wiring. If someone repurposed a 30 amp dryer circuit or ran wire that's a gauge too thin, the whole run heats up. The outlet just shows the symptom first.
Backstab connections deserve a mention too. Those push-in holes on the back of a receptacle are not rated for high continuous current, and using them on a 14-50 is asking for trouble.
Corrosion rounds it out, especially in garages that see humidity or road salt off your tires in winter. Oxidized copper carries current worse, which means more heat.
