What worsening short cycling actually means
Your heater fires up, runs for a minute or two, then shuts off before the water gets close to your target temp. A few minutes later it does the whole thing again.
When this gets worse week over week, something is degrading. A filter loading up, contacts corroding on a switch, scale thickening inside the exchanger.
The heater isn't broken in the sense of being dead. It's protecting itself. Almost every short-cycle shutdown is a safety switch doing its job because the unit got too hot too fast.
That's the key insight: the heater overheats because water isn't carrying the heat away fast enough. Fix the flow and the cycling usually stops.
Why it's happening, in order of odds
About half the time it's low water flow, and the most common source is a dirty filter. As the filter loads with debris, flow drops, the heater overheats, and the high-limit trips. It worsens because the filter keeps loading.
Next up is the flow switch. This little device confirms water is moving before the burner fires. When its paddle gets fouled or the contacts corrode, it sends false or flickering signals and the heater cycles erratically.
Scale is the slow-building cause. Hard water and high pH leave calcium inside the exchanger tubes, which insulates the copper. The metal overheats while your water stays cool, and the limit trips.
Then there's the high-limit switch itself wearing out and tripping early, and less commonly, air in the plumbing or an undersized pump that can't feed the heater enough water.
Notice the pattern. Four of the five common causes come back to water not moving through the heater the way it should.
- Dirty filter or clogged baskets: most common, worsens steadily
- Fouled or failing flow switch: erratic on/off cycling
- Scale on the heat exchanger: gradual, water-quality driven
- Worn high-limit switch: trips at normal temps
- Air lock or undersized pump: often after equipment changes
