What sudden scale buildup actually means
Scale is hardened calcium. It forms when minerals in your water fall out of solution and cement themselves to a surface, and heat is what triggers it.
Your heat exchanger is the hottest spot in the entire pool system. Water runs through thin metal tubes that can hit 140F or more internally, so calcium deposits there long before it shows up anywhere else.
When people say it happened suddenly, it usually didn't. The chemistry drifted for a few weeks, then the scale reached the point where you noticed weaker heat or an error code.
The good news: if you catch it early, this is a chemistry fix plus a cleaning, not a replacement.
Why it's happening
in most cases, the culprit is water chemistry, specifically pH creeping above 7.8. High pH pushes calcium out of solution, and it grabs onto the hottest metal it can find.
High total alkalinity is the sneaky partner here. It buffers your water so hard that pH keeps climbing back up no matter how much acid you add, and you stay stuck in the scaling zone.
Calcium hardness matters too. If there's too much calcium in the water to begin with (over 400 ppm), it doesn't take much heat to start depositing it.
Flow is the other half of the story. Heaters rely on water moving fast enough to carry heat away. When a dirty filter or clogged basket slows that flow, the water inside superheats and scales almost instantly.
Salt pools deserve a special mention. The chlorine cell raises pH right where it produces chlorine, and if that water hits the heater next, you get accelerated scaling even with decent overall numbers.
