What an Ignition Lockout Actually Means
An ignition lockout is your pool heater's built-in safety response. The control board runs the burner through a set startup sequence every time it calls for heat: it proves water flow, energizes the igniter, opens the gas valve, and then reads a flame sensor to confirm the burner actually lit. If it cannot confirm a good flame within a short trial window, it closes the gas and counts a failed attempt.
Most heaters allow two or three attempts before they give up entirely and go into lockout. At that point the heater refuses to try again until the fault is cleared or, in some models, until a set time passes. This is a good thing. The heater is choosing to stay off rather than keep pushing gas into a chamber that will not light.
The key thing to understand is that the lockout itself is not the problem. It is the symptom. Something is preventing a clean, confirmed ignition, and the lockout is the heater's way of telling you so. The job is to find and fix that underlying cause, which is where a licensed technician comes in.
Why This Repair Requires a Professional
Gas pool heaters combine three hazards that each demand training: live gas under pressure, an open flame in a combustion chamber, and high-voltage ignition components. Diagnosing an ignition lockout almost always means running the ignition sequence with gas present to observe what is failing, which is not something to do without proper instruments and experience.
A licensed pool or gas technician has a manometer to check gas pressure, a meter to read the flame rectification signal in microamps, and the training to recognize the difference between a flow problem, a gas problem, and an electrical problem. They also know how to work the gas train safely and how to leave it safe when they are done.
Attempting the repair yourself risks delayed ignition, gas exposure, carbon monoxide, and voided warranties. The tasks that resolve most lockouts, such as cleaning a flame sensor, inspecting the igniter, and verifying gas pressure, all sit inside the gas train. That boundary is exactly where homeowner involvement should stop.
