What's actually happening when your outdoor unit ices up
Your mini-split's outdoor unit ices up for one of two big reasons: it can't melt off frost it normally sheds, or the coil is running abnormally cold because it's low on refrigerant.
In heating mode, frost on that outdoor coil is completely normal. The unit is pulling heat out of cold air, and the coil sits below freezing, so moisture condenses and freezes on it.
A healthy system handles this automatically. Every 30 to 90 minutes it briefly runs in reverse, warms the coil, and melts the frost away. You might see steam and water dripping under the unit.
The trouble starts when that self-cleaning process fails or the coil gets so cold that frost outruns the defrost cycle. Then you get a solid block of ice instead of light frost that comes and goes.
The single best clue is behavior over time. Frost that appears and then disappears within a couple hours is normal. Ice that grows and stays, or comes right back after you thaw it, means a real fault.

Four causes account for most sudden-icing calls I run on mini-splits, and you can rule out or fix two of them yourself.
Start with airflow. It's the easiest to check and shockingly common. Leaves packed into the coil, a snow drift against the side, or a fence built too close all choke the unit until it freezes. Clearing that space fixes more units than people expect.
Next is a dirty coil, which is the invisible version of the same problem. A film of pollen, dust, or pet hair insulates the coil so it can't exchange heat, and it runs colder and longer than it should.
The two big ones you can't fix yourself are a failed defrost cycle and low refrigerant. A defrost fault usually traces to a bad sensor, a control board, or a stuck reversing valve.
Low refrigerant is the one to take seriously. It means you have a leak somewhere, and topping it off without finding the leak just delays the same problem. Systems past the 5-year mark with a slow flare-fitting leak are the classic case.
A dying outdoor fan motor rounds out the list. If air stops moving, the coil ices within minutes. You'll usually hear it, a strain or a hum where a smooth spin should be.
