What the error code is actually telling you
Your mini-split threw a code because its control board caught something it didn't like and shut down to protect itself. That's the short version.
The code is a category, not a diagnosis. It points to a system: communication between units, a sensor, the refrigerant circuit, the compressor, or the power supply.
Here's the part that trips people up. Codes aren't standardized. An 'E6' on one brand is a communication fault; on another it's something completely different.
So step one isn't googling the code. It's finding your model number on the outdoor unit's data plate, then matching the code to that specific unit's table.
Once you know the category, you'll know whether this is a filter you can clean in five minutes or a compressor call to a licensed tech.
The faults behind most mini-split codes
In the field, mini-split codes cluster into a handful of usual suspects. Knowing the odds helps you spend your time on the right check.
Communication faults top the list. The indoor head and the outdoor condenser talk over a signal wire, and that connection loves to corrode or work loose. A rodent chewing the wire behind the unit does it too.
Sensor faults come next. Those little thermistors that read coil and air temperature are cheap, and they drift or die as the unit ages. When the board sees an impossible reading, it throws a code.
Refrigerant issues show up as low-pressure or discharge-temp codes. Mini-splits are sealed systems, so if the charge is dropping, you've got a leak somewhere. This one is pro-only.
Then there's the outdoor fan and inverter board. Overcurrent, over-temp, or a stalled fan locks the compressor out. These are the pricey repairs, and the compressor is usually the victim, not the cause.
Power and drain faults round it out. Low voltage or a repeatedly tripping breaker points to electrical trouble. A clogged condensate drain trips a float switch on units that have one.
