What's actually happening overnight
Your pump is losing prime because air is getting into the suction side while the pump sits idle overnight. When the pump shuts off, water in the pot and lines drains back toward the pool, and air moves in to fill the gap.
By morning, the strainer pot is part air, part water. The pump can't build enough vacuum to pull a solid column of water, so it just churns and won't catch prime.
Two things have to be true for this overnight pattern: there's a slow air leak somewhere between the skimmer and the pump inlet, and water can drain backward when the pump stops.
Fix the air leak (usually the lid o-ring) and make sure water can't drain back (a working check valve), and the problem's gone.
The usual suspects, in order
Start with the pump lid o-ring. It's the most common cause by a wide margin. The ring dries out, flattens, or slips in its groove, and it leaks air under suction even when it looks okay to the eye.
Next, walk the suction plumbing. Threaded PVC unions loosen over time, and thread tape fails. Any joint between the skimmer and the pump inlet is fair game.
Then think about drain-back. If your pump sits above the pool water line and there's no check valve (or a bad one), water simply runs backward every night by gravity. Even a perfect seal won't stop that.
Cracks in the clear lid or the pump housing are sneaky. They only leak when the pump pulls vacuum, so you'll never spot them with the pump off. Inspect in bright light.
Lower on the list: worn diverter valve seals, a tired shaft seal, and a pool water level that's dropped below the skimmer mouth. These are real but less common for a strictly overnight pattern.
