Why does my pool pump lose prime overnight?

Start with the pump lid o-ring. It's the most common cause by a wide margin. The ring dries out, flattens, or slips in its groove, and it leaks air under suction even when it looks okay to the eye.

Next, walk the suction plumbing. Threaded PVC unions loosen over time, and thread tape fails. Any joint between the skimmer and the pump inlet is fair game.

Then think about drain-back. If your pump sits above the pool water line and there's no check valve (or a bad one), water simply runs backward every night by gravity. Even a perfect seal won't stop that.

Cracks in the clear lid or the pump housing are sneaky. They only leak when the pump pulls vacuum, so you'll never spot them with the pump off. Inspect in bright light.

Lower on the list: worn diverter valve seals, a tired shaft seal, and a pool water level that's dropped below the skimmer mouth. These are real but less common for a strictly overnight pattern.

How to chase it down, step by step

Work from cheapest and most likely to hardest and least likely. You'll usually stop after step three.

First, cut power at the breaker. Pool pumps often run on timers and can start on their own. Don't skip this.

Open the lid and pull the o-ring. Wipe out the groove and the ring. Coat the ring lightly with silicone pool lube, reseat it, and close the lid hand-tight.

Fill the strainer pot all the way with water using a hose, then restart the pump. Watch the basket. If it primes and runs clear, run it a full night and check in the morning.

If you still see air bubbles while running, the leak is upstream. Go fitting by fitting. Snug unions, redo threaded joints with fresh tape, and look hard at the clear lid for cracks.

A shaving cream or pool-lube trick helps here. With the pump running, smear a little over each suction fitting one at a time. The vacuum will suck it into any leak point, and you'll see the bubbles react.

If it primes fine but only drains back overnight, focus on the check valve. A clear-body valve lets you watch the flapper. Stuck open or torn means replace it. No valve at all on an above-water pump means you probably need one.

Last, check your water level. It should sit at the middle of the skimmer opening, not the bottom edge.
