What's actually happening
Your pool pump trips the breaker in winter because something is letting electricity leak to ground, and cold weather is usually the reason it started.
The most common culprit is water inside the motor. Freeze-thaw cycles crack the seals, meltwater gets in, and the windings short to the frame. The breaker sees that leak and cuts power.
If you're on a GFCI breaker (required for pool equipment for years now), the trip is often a genuine ground fault, not a nuisance. That's the breaker doing exactly what it's built to do.
First move: turn the breaker off and leave it off. Don't sit there resetting it. A wet or shorted motor that gets forced back on is how pumps catch fire.
The good news is diagnosis is straightforward. A few visual checks tell you whether you're looking at a $200 fix or a full pump replacement.
Why winter pumps trip: the real causes
Water intrusion is the top cause, and winter makes it worse. Cracked seals from freezing let meltwater into the motor, and once it bridges the windings to the metal frame, you get an instant ground fault.
Right behind that is a motor that's simply worn out. Windings degrade over years of heat cycling, and a cold morning is often the day they finally short. Motors past 8 to 12 years are the usual suspects.
Don't rule out the breaker itself. GFCI breakers wear out, and cold plus panel moisture can make an aging one trip on its own. Sometimes the pump is fine.
The junction box at the pump takes a lot of weather abuse. Water in the box, corroded lugs, or wiring chewed by rodents over winter will all short to ground.
Less often, water froze solid inside the pump and seized the impeller. The motor draws heavy startup current fighting the ice and trips on overload.
