Why your breaker trips in winter (and not the rest of the year)
The short version: winter piles on loads that don't exist in July. Space heaters, electric blankets, block heaters, heat tape, and holiday lights all draw real current.
A breaker's job is to trip when a circuit pulls more than it's rated for. So a winter-only trip is usually the breaker telling you the truth: you're asking that circuit to do too much.
The other big winter culprit is moisture. Snow and condensation get into outdoor outlets and trip GFCIs on purpose, which is exactly what they're built to do.
Most of the time this is a low-urgency fix you can handle yourself by spreading loads out. The exception is anything involving heat or a smell, which jumps straight to call-a-pro.
What's actually causing it
Start with the math, because it's usually the answer. A standard 15-amp circuit safely carries about 12 amps of continuous load. A single 1,500-watt heater eats 12.5 amps by itself.
That means one heater plus almost anything else, or two heaters anywhere on the same circuit, tips it over. And outlets in two different rooms often share one breaker, which trips up a lot of people.
If it's a GFCI trip, look outside and in the garage. A wet outlet, a cracked cover, or a plug sitting in a puddle of snowmelt will trip the GFCI every time until it dries out.
AFCI breakers (bedrooms, mostly, in newer or rewired homes) are pickier. Certain motors and cheap chargers can fool them, but repeated trips can also mean real arcing you don't want to ignore.
The one cause that isn't about load is a loose connection. Winter runs circuits hard for hours, so a marginal terminal heats up and finally trips or scorches. That's the version that needs a pro.
