What a buzzing panel in summer actually means
Your panel is buzzing because current is jumping a gap it shouldn't. That's an arc, and arcs make sound, heat, and eventually fire.
In summer the culprit is almost always your air conditioning. The compressor draws a heavy, sustained current, and any weak spot in the panel (a loose breaker clip, a tired breaker, a slack lug) heats up and starts to buzz.
The tell is timing. If the buzz swells when the AC kicks on and fades when it shuts off, you've found your load. That connection is failing under the strain.
Here's the honest read: a faint hum with a cool panel and no smell is probably not an emergency tonight, but it still needs a look. A loud buzz, warmth, or any burning smell is a shut-it-off-now situation.
Panels don't heal. A connection that's started arcing gets worse every cooling cycle, so 'it's been doing that a while' isn't reassuring. It means the damage has been building.
The usual suspects, ranked
Most summer panel buzzing comes down to a handful of failure points, and load is the common thread on all of them.
A loose breaker-to-bus connection tops the list. Breakers clip onto a metal bar, and decades of thermal cycling loosen that grip. Under AC load, the loose contact arcs and buzzes.
A worn breaker is a close second. The internal contacts pit over years, especially on a circuit that runs near its limit or trips often. It can't hold clean contact anymore, so it hums.
Then there's the panel that's simply maxed out. A 100-amp service running a 3-ton AC alongside a dryer or range in July is stretched thin, and the whole thing strains under the draw.
The scarier causes are loose main lugs and degrading aluminum branch wiring. Both buzz, both are dangerous, and neither is a homeowner repair. A loose main can arc across your entire service.
Occasionally the buzz isn't the panel at all. A doorbell transformer or dimmer mounted nearby hums and echoes off the metal box. That one's harmless, but only a real inspection confirms it.
