What flickering when the AC starts actually means
Your AC compressor is one of the biggest single loads in the house. When it kicks on, it grabs a surge of current several times its normal draw for a split second.
That surge sags the voltage briefly, and your lights blink. If it's one clean dip that recovers instantly, that's just the motor waking up.
The problem is when the flicker tells a different story. A long, repeating dim, or lights flickering all over the house, means something in your electrical path can't handle the load cleanly.
The pattern matters most. If some lights dim while others brighten at the same instant, stop reading and call an electrician. That's a loose neutral and it's the one failure here that can burn your house down.
The usual causes, ranked by what I actually find
Most of the time, a quick flicker is just inrush current and there's nothing wrong. I don't want to scare you off a normal blink.
But when it's more than that, a loose main neutral is at the top of my list. It's the most dangerous and it's more common than people think, especially where the utility drop connects or at the meter base.
Right behind that is the AC unit itself. A worn contactor or a tired start capacitor makes the compressor labor on startup, dragging the flicker out longer every cycle. That's an HVAC fix, not a panel fix.
Then come the panel-side issues: a worn breaker with pitted contacts, or wiring that's undersized or overloaded because circuits got added on over the years.
Least likely but real: the utility. A degraded transformer or a loose service drop can sag voltage on a hot day when everybody's AC is cranking. If the whole block dims, that's your answer.
