What's actually going on
Your garage door starts to close, then rolls right back up. Or it won't budge at all from the remote, and there's a light blinking down by the floor.
That light is the photo eye, the safety sensor that stops the door from crushing whatever's in its path. In winter, these things get finicky for a handful of predictable reasons.
The good news: most winter photo eye problems are alignment, fog, or a bumped bracket. You can fix the majority of them in the time it takes to shovel the driveway.
The beam runs between two small sensors mounted about 6 inches off the floor on each side of the door. One sends an invisible infrared beam, the other receives it. Break the beam and the door refuses to close, by design.
Why winter breaks the beam
Cold does three things to your sensors, and they often gang up.
First, condensation. A warm car in a cold garage dumps moisture into the air, and it settles on the coldest surfaces. The sensor lenses sit low and cold, so they fog. A film you can barely see is enough to break the beam.
Second, contraction. Steel tracks and brackets shrink as the temperature drops. A sensor that was aligned at 60F can drift a millimeter or two at 15F. If your aim was already borderline, that's the last straw.
Third, physical bumps. Winter clutter piles up right in the sensor zone: shovels, salt bags, boots, bikes. It only takes one knock to knock the eye off target.
There are two sneakier causes worth knowing. Corroded wiring from tracked-in road salt reads exactly like misalignment to the opener. And low winter sun can glare into the receiving eye around midday and wash out the beam entirely.
