How to run the balance test properly

Most people run this test wrong, then draw the wrong conclusion. Here's the version techs use.

Start with the door fully closed. Not partway. Fully closed, so the springs are at full wind and the trolley is at the end of its travel. Then pull the release cord straight down and back toward the opener to disengage the trolley.

Lift the door with two hands, evenly, from the bottom section. A properly balanced door on healthy springs lifts with roughly 10 pounds of effort, about what a full gallon of milk feels like. If it feels like 40 or 60 pounds, the springs are weak.

Now the important part. Stop at about waist height, 3 to 4 feet up, and let go slowly. A balanced door drifts no more than 2 or 3 inches in either direction. A door that slams to the floor is under-sprung. A door that shoots upward is over-sprung, which is less common but does happen after a botched spring swap.

Then repeat at head height and near the top. Springs can be adequate at one point in the travel and terrible at another, especially if the cables have unwound unevenly on the drums.

While the opener is disconnected, push the door slowly through its whole travel by hand and feel for the catch. Your hands will find a binding roller faster than your ears will.

If the door drops hard during this test, get your fingers clear and don't try to catch it. A 160-pound door with no spring support will take a hand off the top of a panel. Reconnect the opener and call a tech.

The lubrication and tighten pass (do this before spending money)

A shocking share of shuddering doors are cured by 20 minutes and a $10 can of the right lubricant. Not most of them, but enough that it's the first move every time.

Unplug the opener first. Then work through the hardware in order.

Then grab a socket and go around the perimeter. Jamb bracket lags into the wood jamb, hinge bolts, the angle iron or perforated strap holding the horizontal track to the framing. Snug them. Don't gorilla them, since 20-gauge steel strips easily.

Cycle the door 3 or 4 times and reassess. If the shudder dropped by 80 percent, friction was the story and you're done for another year.
