What's actually happening when the door closes then reopens
Your opener isn't broken. It's doing its job.
Every garage door opener sold in the US since 1993 has to reverse the door if its safety sensors sense something in the closing path. That reversal on close is the law, thanks to the safety rules that followed a string of child injuries.
So when the door heads down and then bounces right back up, the opener believes the path is blocked. The trick is figuring out why it thinks that when the path is clearly clear.
The two little sensors mounted low on each side of the door, usually 4 to 6 inches off the floor, shine an invisible infrared beam across the opening. Break that beam and the door reverses.
Most of the time the beam is broken for a boring reason: a bumped sensor, a dusty lens, or the sun in the wrong spot. Good news, because those cost nothing to fix.
The likely causes, ranked
Start with the sensors. They cause this symptom far more than everything else combined.
Misalignment is number one. A car door swings open, a rake leans against the wall, a kid kicks a ball, and one sensor gets nudged a few degrees off. That's all it takes.
Dirty lenses are a close second. The plastic eye collects dust, cobwebs, and condensation. The beam weakens until the opener reads it as blocked, even though nothing's physically there.
Sun glare is the sneaky one. If the reversal only happens at certain times of day, low sunlight is probably blinding the receiving sensor. People chase this for weeks before they notice the pattern.
Wiring faults come next. The thin sensor wires get stapled too tight, chewed by mice, or pinched behind the track. That makes the sensors drop out at random, which drives people crazy because it seems intermittent.
Travel and force settings can do it too, but with a specific signature: the door reverses right at the floor, not partway down. The opener thinks the ground is an obstruction.
Last on the list is the logic board. When everything else checks out and the door still reverses, the opener's brain may be misreading the safety circuit. That's usually an older unit or one that survived a power surge.
