What cracked winter cap stones are telling you
Cracked cap stones in winter almost always mean one thing: water got inside the stone or the joints, then froze and expanded.
Water grows about 9 percent when it freezes. Trapped inside a porous cap or a tight mortar joint, that expansion has nowhere to go except into the stone. So it splits.
Here's the part homeowners miss. The freeze is the trigger, but the water path is the real problem. That water was getting in for weeks or months before the crack showed up.
The cap course takes the worst of it. It's flat, it's exposed, and it holds water longer than the sloped face of the wall. That's why the top cracks first while the wall below looks fine.
Why it's happening on your wall
Start with the joints. Once the mortar between caps cracks or falls out, water pours straight down into the wall core and freezes there. This is the most common path techs find.
Next, check the slope. Caps are supposed to shed water off the front or back with a slight pitch. A flat or back-tilted cap holds a puddle, and that puddle soaks in and freezes.
Porous stone matters too. Sandstone and some limestone drink water. Granite barely does. If your caps are a soft stone, freeze-thaw hits them harder every year.
Drainage behind the wall is the quiet culprit. Clogged or missing weep holes let water back up and saturate the top of the wall from behind. You won't see it, but the caps feel it.
In colder regions, frost heave can lift the wall unevenly and crack the rigid cap course from below. That's a soil and drainage issue, not a stone issue.
