What a frozen heat pump actually means
Here's the short version: some frost is normal, thick ice that never melts is not.
Your heat pump pulls heat out of cold outdoor air. To do that, the outdoor coil runs colder than the air around it. Moisture in the air lands on that cold coil and freezes. Simple physics, and it happens on healthy units every winter.
The system is built to deal with this. Every 30 to 90 minutes it briefly reverses itself, runs warm refrigerant through the outdoor coil, and melts the frost off. That's the defrost cycle. You'll often see steam and hear a whoosh when it kicks in.
So a little frost or a thin coat of ice that comes and goes is the unit doing its job. What you're worried about is a coil buried in a solid block of ice that grows all day and swallows the fan.
That kind of ice means the defrost system, the fan, or the refrigerant charge has a real problem. And that's a service call.
Why it's freezing: the real causes
When ice takes over and won't clear, the cause is almost always one of a handful of things.
The most common is a failed defrost sensor or control board. That sensor watches coil temperature and tells the board when to melt. When it drifts or dies, defrost never fires and ice wins. This is what techs find on maybe half the frozen units I visit.
Low refrigerant is next. A low charge makes the coil run even colder than normal, so it frosts faster than defrost can keep up. Low charge means a leak, and a leak doesn't fix itself.
A dead outdoor fan is another one. No airflow across the coil means the frost builds unchecked and locks the fan in ice, which makes it worse in a hurry.
Then there's drainage. If melt water can't escape, it pools under the unit and refreezes into a base of ice that climbs upward over days. Gutters dumping onto the unit are a classic culprit.
Least common but real: a stuck reversing valve, the part that flips the system into defrost mode. If it sticks, the unit can't reverse to melt anything.
