Hard water's back: here's the short version
Your softener was doing its job, and now the spots, film, and scratchy laundry are creeping back. That means treated water isn't reaching your taps like it used to.
The good news: most of the time it's not a dead machine. It's salt, a salt bridge, or a control valve that quietly stopped regenerating.
Start cheap and simple. Check the salt tank and the bypass valve before you assume anything's broken. Those two checks solve a huge chunk of these calls.
If salt and settings look right and water's still hard, you're into valve, injector, or resin territory. That's where a pro or a careful DIYer with the manual comes in.
What's actually causing it
Think of a softener as a loop: salt makes brine, brine recharges the resin, resin pulls hardness out of your water. Break any link and hard water returns.
The most common break is the first link. No salt, or a salt bridge, means no brine. The unit still runs its regen cycle on schedule, but it's washing the resin with plain water and accomplishing nothing.
The second most common break is the control valve. Timers, motors, and cheap circuit boards fail after years of cycling. When the valve stops regenerating, capacity drains over a couple weeks and hard water sneaks back in.
A bypass valve left open is the sneaky one. If anyone worked on your plumbing recently, check it. Treated water can't reach your house if the softener's bypassed.
Further down the list: fouled or aged resin, a plugged injector, or a hardness setting that no longer matches your water. These are real but less common, and you can usually rule them out with a regen test.
